Wetlands in Winter
Program: Wetlands in Winter
Available: January through mid March
Grades: 6 through 12
Maximum group size: 33 pupils
This 2 hour program teaches participants that wetlands are critical habitats even during the coldest months of the year. Participants will learn to identify the signs of a variety of winter residents through a colorful slide presentation and then by a hands-on activity involving replicas of their tracks and scat in our wetlab.
Once becoming familiar with a variety of animal ‘calling cards’ students will strap on a pair of snowshoes and head out onto the wetland to do some real tracking with our staff. Students are also given the opportunity to sample the benthos and verify the diversity of aquatic life that thrives under the ice as well as on top.
